NATO: Not After Mission in Libya

North Atlantic Defense Organization (NATO) was determined to continue the mission in Libya despite the rebel forces had control of Tripoli, which became the power base Muammar Gaddafi's regime forces. Gaddafi's residence complex successfully penetrated the rebellion, but the firefight is still ongoing.

"Our military mission has not changed. We continue to protect civilians, implementing no-fly zones and arms embargo," said Colonel Roland Lavoie, NATO spokesman, quoted by Al-Jazeera news station in Naples, Italy, August 23, 2011 local time.

"We will continue to attack at any time if needed to protect the people of Libya," said Lavoie. NATO's chief spokesman, Oana Lungescu, said that Gaddafi's regime was nearing the end of history.

He even stated that it was likely NATO will continue to play a role in Libya when Gaddafi's regime had been overthrown. Supported by the UN Security Council mandate, NATO in March to replace the U.S. role to lead the air attack on military positions Gaddafi, or indirectly helped maneuver the rebel forces.

Besides supported key members of NATO, like the U.S., Britain and France, the military operation was also backed by the Arab countries, Qatar. Meanwhile, according to the Associated Press, the leaders of NATO member countries next September will decide whether to extend military operations in Libya for the next three months.
